Community Projects

The City of Houston's Mayor Sylvester Turner hosted the seventh annual Mayor's Back to School fest on Saturday, August 11, 2018, at the George R. Brown Convention Center.

The event welcomed almost 25,000 students and their families to help prepare them for the new school year. Immunizations, school uniform vouchers, haircut vouchers as well as other school and health-related information was provided to all who participated in the event. The University of Houston College of Optometry also participated by providing vision screenings to students, and other UH colleges and programs assisted by participating in the event's expo area by providing community oriented information. Metropolitan Volunteer Program  

The Metropolitan Volunteer Program is a student organization at UH that creates and provides service opportunities for students by collaborating with campus and community partners. Volunteering with MVP not only provides students with the opportunity to make a positive impact on our campus and community but also to gain leadership skills, build relationships with fellow students and gain experience in their field of interest.

MVP organizes volunteer opportunities in many areas including education, health environment & sustainability, and senior citizens. They have volunteer opportunities to fit the needs for every student, whether they are looking for assistance with smaller, ongoing service projects or larger annual service events that MVP hosts each semester. Houston Area Teacher Center

The Houston Area Teacher Center (HATC) is a consortium of more than 30 Houston-area school systems with the University of Houston’s College of Education. HATC's member school districts represent more elementary and secondary students than many of the states.
HATC was founded in 1970 and began operation in 1971 with six school systems. It is the oldest and largest teacher center in the nation. In 2011, HATC celebrated 40 years of service to Houston school systems and to the teaching profession.
The Center is a forum for the College and area school systems to collaborate on solutions to issues of common concern, such as teacher supply and demand, teacher quality, policies and procedures for the placement of student teachers, and for working with partner schools. Twice annually, HATC sponsors Houston Area Student Teaching Conference and Teacher Job Fair, bringing together at UH Main campus hundreds of student teachers from Houston area universities.

Houston PBS

The University of Houston and HoustonPBS Channel 8 have collaborated to produce a new edition to the Channel 8 lineup, "UH Moment." Currently heard on KUHF-FM radio, this series of 60-second informational spots that feature stories of UH's innovative research, programs and successes, appear on broadcast television six times a week on both KUHT Channel 8.1, and 8.2.

College of Optometry Mobile Eye Institute

The University of Houston Mobile Eye Institute (MEI) is equipped with the latest in ophthalmic technology and brings comprehensive on-site vision services to patients in need of optometric care. Subsidized by the City of Houston and area foundations, MEI services are designed to be offered to patients who don't have access to the traditional healthcare system or who are unable to travel to the University Eye Institute or one of its three neighborhood clinics.

In addition to offering comprehensive eye examinations, MEI optometrists will also diagnose and treat common eye diseases such as allergies, dry eye or conjunctivitis. Prescriptions for eyeglasses and contact lenses will be written as well as appropriate referrals for specialized vision care. If an emergency situation demands it, the Mobile Eye Institute also has the equipment to manufacture lenses on the premises.

Community Design Resource Center

The mission of the Community Design Resource Center is to enhance the quality of life in low-to-moderate income communities throughout the Houston region through design, research, education, and practice.

The Community Design Resource Center works to address issues of community development, design, planning, affordable housing and civic projects in partnership with communities.

Since 2005, we have partnered with more than 15 community-based organizations, including the City of Houston, METRO and others.

Connecting Bauer to Business Corporate Projects program

The corporate projects are group research projects that culminate in a final deliverable, usually a PowerPoint presentation and executive summary. Corporate sponsors choose a project topic relevant to their company and on which they would like to have some research done and hear a new perspective from the next generation of business professionals. Groups are usually made up of eight students.
